Synopsis
John Hilliard rejoins his battalion near the front in World War I. They've been deimated in his absence and morale is low. A newcomer, David Barton, raises spirits and he and Hilliard form a close friendship despite their hardships. David's largeish family 'adopts' John, whose own parents and sister are rather cold and distant, although generous in their gifts.
Notes
As harrowing a tale as most of the Great War: the horrendous conditions in the trenches, the apparent pointlessness of many skirmishes and sorties. Nonetheless, the two friends keep each other sane and the contrast between their families is positive overall.
