Eliot's American mother dies in a mugging and he stays with his English cousins while his father comes to term with his grief. Eliot finds himself haunted by a young woman who was kept confined in his room after her fiance is killed in the Great War. He has to confront the people still alive who knew her then.
A fairly normal haunting story with a slight twist, which is fairly predictable. However, I like the human touches as the family of parents and two young teenage daughters takes in their unknown cousin and tries to help him while he grieves and apparently becomes destructive although this is in fact the dead Mary Ellen at work.
