Stan
Style: Good
Attitude: Unobjectionable
Age Range: Young Teens
Period: Contemporary
Genres: Gritty , Growing-Up
Synopsis:
Stan, 14, runs away from his foster home in London, trying to reach his brother in Ireland. He is chased by Julio, a drug dealer, who is after the drugs he'd left by mistake in Stan's bag. Stan is befriended by several people whom he reluctantly lies to and steals from before getting caught up with a young IRA gang in Belfast who are caught escaping across the border when their lorry catches fire. He is taken in by a local monastery and reunited with his brother.
Notes:
Stan's refusal to accept a provident God, prompted mostly by the uninspiring examples of foster parents and others, is tempered at the end by the kindness of the monks who nurse him to health.
