Synopsis:
The story of Gideon, a 16-year-old deaf and retarded boy, who is given a job on a barge for the summer. The summer is seen through the eyes of Eva, his 12-year-old sister.
Notes:
An amusing description of a normal family with a 12-year-old schoolgirl, 2 toddlers with outsize imaginations, a loving but harrassed mother, a father absent much of the time on his boat (we assume in the Navy), and a grandfater trying to rebuild a house, all complicated by a happy 16-year-old with whom only the family can easily communicate, but who gets on well with the barge owner and the trippers who travel on her.
