The Wild Hunt of Hagworthy

Style: Weak

Attitude: Positive

Author: Penelope Lively

Age Range: Children

Period: Contemporary

Genres:  MagicSpooky

Synopsis:

12-year-old Lucy returns to Hagworthy to stay with her aunt. She re- establishes contact with the friends she previously had, though they have changed. The vicar and the horsey Mrs Norton-Standen are trying to revive the ancient Hunt dance at the village fete, despite opposition from the villagers. The dance seems to take over the male members, who hunt Lucy's friend Kester, the one who sets himself apart, until the mythical Wild Hunt itself appears and is dismissed by Lucy with an iron horseshoe.

Notes:

Not an especially worthwhile read, even if you are interested in the legends of Herne the Hunter and the Wild Hunt. Most of the characters are painted cut-outs, with only Kester and Lucy developing, and then not very much.
