Synopsis:
The story of the voyage of several hundred Jews fleeing prewar Europe across the Atlantic. The boat they are on is basic and they have to endure want and illness. The story is told through the eyes of a dozen of them, each with his or her own problems and aspirations, but the focus of the narrative is 14 -year-old Mina and her family.
Notes:
A worthwhile read, dwelling on the human qualities which make up each of the people depicted: the young and the old, married and single, male and female. What unites them is that they are fleeing with all they possess to start a new life in America. The romance in the story is touchingly and delicately portrayed; most of this occurs between Yasha and Rachel, both around 20, but the budding love of the 14-year-olds Mina and Daniel is well-handled and is a far cry from the brash and precocious lovemaking of other teen-oriented books.
