- [Maurice] is Christie's step-father, replacing Christie's long-estranged father. He has looked after his son Danny since he was a baby, knowing what Maggie claimed to have done with him and determined to prevent her from having any more contact. He does his best to be a good father to Christie, in spite of the boy's rebuffs.
Synopsis:
Christie follows Danny his strange half-brother and Darling the starling to Dublin early one morning, where they meet Tina, the homeless teenager and Oggy the dog and set off for the north of Scotland where Danny's mother lives with other talking animals. Around them the world is going through a worsening fuel crisis which gives rise to social unrest and a breakdown in services and infrastructure. They battle through some difficulties to reach the Fourth World, Maggie's self-sufficient homestead, and when they do, Christie discovers the reason for Danny's apparent strangeness.
