Synopsis:
The story of an Indian village family, roughly contemporary. The mother is ill and the father permanently drunk. The two younger sisters cannot help, so the older boy and girl have to find money and help. The boy goes to Bombay to protest against the construction of a factory near their village; he stays in Bombay and finds work, eventually bringing some money home. The girl, meanwhile, stays with the family, enlisting the help of a well-to-do visiting family, who employ her and her sisters and who pay for their mother's hospital treatment. Their father, when he realises how bad the mother's illness is, manages to give up drink and stays with her.
