Synopsis:

Nicholas Fetterlock is the son of a Cotswolds wool merchant at the end of the 15th century when the wool had made such merchants and the country rich. His father gets involved with some Lombard merchants whom Nicholas suspects of underhand dealings.

Notes:

As with all the author's books around this historical period there is a mixture of storytelling, simple faith and gentle teaching, with her own illustrations and an endnote telling you more about the area it was set in.

They plodded on at a walking pace while the sun rose high in the heavens. Once they turned aside to hear Mass at a tiny village church, whose walls inside were completely covered with paintings. They crossed the Thames at Radcot by an ancient bridge with three pointed arches, its stones worn by many winter floods. “A fine bridge, to the honour of our Lady”, observed Master Fetterlock. “Notice the statue, Nicholas - there, on the side facing downstream. They say this bridge has stood for a couple of hundred years or more, and I should not wonder if it stands another two hundred.
