The Jacaranda Tree

Style: Good

Attitude: Objectionable

Author: H.E. Bates

Age Range: Adult

Period: Mid 20th C

Genres:  HistoricalWar

Synopsis:

Patterson, manager of a plantation in Burma, organises the evacuation of the small English community there as the Japanese advance. There is dissension within the group, and they split up in varius ways, leaving only Patterson and his two Burmese servants, one a young boy, the other the boy's sister with whom Patterson sleeps.

Notes:

The difficulty with this book is the principal character Patterson, portrayed as commonsensical, friendly and normal, especially to the natives. He sleeps, more-or-less openly, with Nadia a young Burmese, and the objections of the others are depicted as superficial convention. Two of the the other women (one married, the other not) try to attract him and there are a number of over- intimate descriptions of their bodies.
